1853 Commodore Perry arrived in Uraga.
1858 Kanagawa was specified as one the five open ports by The US-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce.
1859 The Port of Yokohama was opened.
1864 The East Pier was opened

1868 Establishment of Kanagawa Prefecture.
1872 The first railroad between Shinbashi and Yokohama.
1889 Founding of the city government of Yokohama.
1894 Completion of the Yokohama Harbor Pier (today's Osanbashi Pier).
1895 Establishment of the Silk Inspection Hall.
1896 Construction completed on the first section of the Port of Yokohama (inner breakwater and Osanbashi Pier).
1911 Completion of the reclamation work for Shinko Pier

1913 Completion of No.1 brick warehouse at Shinko Pier.
1917 The Port Opening Memorial Hall was opened.
1923 Destruction of the harbor facilities by the Great Kanto Earthquake.


Showa era

1928 The city owned bus system opened for service with seven routes over a 32 km length.
1930 Completion of Yamashita Park.
1932 Completion of Yamanouchi Pier.
1933 Completion of Takashima No.1 Pier and timber pool.
1936 Completion of the coastal industrial zone (Ebisu-cho, Takara-cho, and Daikoku-cho).
1945 World War 2ended and Yokohama port facilities were requisitioned. Compeletion Mizuho Pier.
1951 The City of Yokohama became the port management body.
1953 The first "Minato Matsuri" (Port Festival) was held, featuring an international costume parade. The establishment of the Port of Yokohama Promotion Association.
1954 Completion of Takashima No.3 Pier and Detamachi Pier.
1956 Yokohama City became an ordinance-designated city.
1961 Completion of the reclamation work for Daikoku-cho and the Marine Tower.
1962 Opening of the Harbor View Park.
1963 Completion of Yamashita Pier and the reclamation work of the 1st section in Negishi Bay. Construction of Honmoku Pier was started.
1964 Completion of Osanbashi Passenger Terminal. The Tokyo Olympics were held.
1968 The 1st full-container ship entered Honmoku Pier. Metropolitan Expressway, Yokohama-Haneda Route was opened to traffic.
1969 Completion of the incineration facilities for sunken and scrapped ships and the Yokohama Small Ship Ballast Water Processing Facility.
1970 Completion of the Honmoku Pier related industrial zone.
1971 Reclamation works in front of the Kanazawa area and Daikoku Pier began.
1972 The city subway was opened to traffic (between Kamiooka and Isezaki-chojamachi) was opened to traffic.
1974 Completion of Kanazawa Timber Pier and Daikoku Ohashi.
1976 The reclamation work of Ogishima began.
1977 Completion of the reclamation works of Kanazawa area and of the Sea Park.
1978 The port of Yokohama Marine Waste Incineration Facility was completed. Honmoku Fishing Jetty was opened.
1980 The sand beach of the Sea Park was opened. The construction of the Yokohama Bay Bridge began.
1981 Establishment of the Yokohama Port Development Public Corporation.
1982 The operation of the computing system of Port & Harbor Bureau began.
1983 The construction of Minato Mirai 21 began.
1984 Completion of the first phase of the reclamation work of Daikoku Pier.
1985 Takashima Pier was decomissioned. The Nippon Maru Memorial Park was opened.
1986 Completion of the Port of Yokohama Symbol Tower.
1987 The construction of Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge began.
1988 Beach in the Marine Park was opened.


Heisei era

1989 The Yokohama Exposition in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Yokohama City Government and the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama was held. The Yokohama Maritime Museum was opened.
The Yokohama Bay Bridge was opened to traffic. A Representative office of the Port of Yokohama was established in Taiwan.
1990 The construction of Minami Honmoku Pier was started. Daikoku Pier was completed. A Representative office of the Port of Yokohama was established in Seoul, Korea.
1991 Completion of the Marine Terminal (Pukari Sanbashi at MM21).
1992 The operation of the Yokohama Air Cargo Terminal (YAT) was started. Yokohama Port International Cargo Center Co,Ltd. was established.
1993 Yokohama Hakkeijima island began. The number of porcessed containers exceeded 2,000,000 TEU. The Yokohama International Passenger Terminal was opened. Yokohama Bayside Marine Co,Ltd. was established.
1994 The Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge (The forth phase of the Bay-Shore Route) was completed. The construction of Yokohama Cargo Center (Y-CC) began.
1996 Yokohama Bayside Marina was opened. Yokohama Port Cargo Center (Y-CC) was opened.
1999 Yokohama World Porters, NAVIOS Yokohama was opened
2001 Nation's first deep-water (-16m), high-standard container terminal opened in Minami Honmoku Pier.
2002 The New Yokohama International Passenger Terminal was opened.
2004 Port of Yokohama was designated as the 'Super Hub Port' by the national government.
